The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) has launched a pilot project to examine the use of registered trademarks. Each month, the Registrar of Trademarks randomly selects marks that have been registered for more than three years and requires evidence of use or justification in the event of non-use. This initiative could have a significant impact on foreign businesses, including those in the UK, which will have to pay closer attention to the use of their trademarks in Canada.

In an article published on the Foot Anstey website, a UK law firm, our Practice Leader of the Trademarks Group, Catherine Bergeron, in collaboration with Ben Travers, Head of Intellectual Property at Foot Anstey, analyze the implications of this initiative for foreign businesses.
