The ground-breaking technology of ECO2 Magnesia’s unique project drew considerable attention at COP26, the United Nations Climate Change Conference.
The ECO2 Project, unique in its kind, is a global leader in the decontamination and transformation of waste mine tailings to produce the world’s first green magnesium oxide. Founded on the principles of the circular economy, ECO2 Magnesia is an example of “doing well while doing good”.
The revolutionary ECO2 technology was invented at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) in Québec. The innovative process only uses water and CO2 to produce MgO and any CO2 that is emitted is captured and recycled in a closed loop. Due to the ecofriendly nature of the process, ECO2 Magnesia is able to produce a magnesium oxide with the lowest carbon footprint in the world!
Magnesium oxide is essential for the production of a wide range of items, including refractory bricks and materials which offer protection against high temperatures and corrosion, which is essential for cement plants, steel mills and aluminum smelters. In addition, magnesium oxide is used in specialty products such as steel for the electrical industry (e.g., manufacturing of special alloys for power transmission lines) and as an ingredient in the plastics and rubber industry.
